The Cape Elizabeth Capers will be participating in a junior varsity league at the sparkling new Casco Bay Arena this winter, the organization announced on Friday. The school had been considering taking the leap for the league's inaugural season and pen was put to paper on Friday afternoon by Cape Elizabeth athletic director Jeff Thoreck, ensuring the Capers will play at least 10 games against top JV competition from around the area.
The official slate of teams in the league is not yet known, but it is expected that Falmouth, Greely, Yarmouth, Windham and a selection of other local schools will be participating, giving the upstart league 8 member associations for it's first year. The Capers JV team went 8-4-2 last season but had 5 games cancelled due to snow, making the consistent schedule especially appealing for the organization.
All of the games will be played on Friday night, mostly between 5:30 and 9:00 p.m. with teams rotating slots weekly. The Capers JV squad will also use the Casco Bay Arena, a $2 million project several years in the making, as it's practice arena beginning with the upcoming season. The official schedule has not been confirmed for the JV league but is expected to be completed by November.
While the 2015-2016 Cape Elizabeth Capers hockey schedule awaits it's final touches the opponents matrix, along with the official date for the season opener, were revealed on Monday afternoon.
The Capers will open the season against Maranacook on December 5th at home at Troubh Ice Arena. The Capers took the only meeting with Maranacook in the 2014-2015 season by a final of 7-3. The Capers will also travel to Maranacook later in the season.
Cape Elizabeth will only play four Class A teams this season, as local rivalries with Cheverus, Portland/Deering, and Scarborough will be renewed, as well as a trip to Auburn to take on Edward Little. That Capers have lost their last three meetings each with Scarborough and Cheverus, but have beat Portland the last three seasons consecutively.
The Capers will also travel to Camden Hills for the second consecutive season. The Capers won in the regular season and the playoffs at Camden Hills in 2014-2015. Since the beginning of the 2012-2013 season, the two Class B powerhouses have met 5 times and have been nearly impossible to split. Four of the five meetings have been decided by a goal, with an aggregate score of 16-16 proving the competitiveness of one of Maine's best active high school hockey rivalries.
The Capers will play home and away series with Yarmouth, Kennebunk, Brunswick, and the aforementioned Maranacook. The Capers round out their schedule with one-off match-ups against storied rival Greely, an exciting and improving Gardiner High School, and a trip to Gorham for a tilt with the two-time defending Class B West Champions.
The official schedule is expected to be released in the coming weeks. The Capers first practice is slated for November 16th. The Capers are expected to have a busy pre-season schedule, with several scrimmages lined up and awaiting confirmation.
In what is an annual reminder that hockey season is fast approaching, the Cape Elizabeth Boys Hockey Boosters will be holding a boosters meeting on Tuesday, September 22nd at Community Services. The meeting will be held upstairs.
Among a host of topics to discuss are fundraising initiatives, team dinner and equipment needs, and updates will be provided on the new Casco Bay ice arena in Falmouth.
All are encouraged to attend. The meeting begins at 7:00 p.m and generally lasts around an hour to an hour and a half.
